Here’s a tiny glimpse from one of the lessons in my upcoming online course, CAD for Grads — designed to give recent graduates the essential AutoCAD® skills they need to hit the ground running in Design, Construction, Architecture, and Engineering.

“CAD for Grads” will appear on my new e-learning website Life’s for Learning (www.lifesforlearning.com), currently under construction. Stay tuned for more info.

In this clip, you’ll see an unscripted race between two contestants trying to finish the same simple, repetitive task:

  • One uses the Ribbon and mouse.
  • The other uses the keyboard and hotkeys.

Who will win? Watch and see!

Over the years, I’ve noticed that even some of the best colleges and universities skip over teaching solid CAD skills to future designers, architects, and engineers.

Graduates then step into the job market stressed and underprepared, missing a critical skill that employers expect — and value highly. It’s a real missed opportunity, for both the graduates and the companies who might have hired them.

From my time as an architect, CAD/Revit consultant, and college teacher, I can tell you this:
One of the first questions a hiring manager will ask in a technical field is, “What’s your CAD (or Revit) experience?”

The truth is simple:
Confident, efficient use of CAD can open doors to the best jobs — and keep those doors open. CAD is the language of design today. It’s how we turn big ideas into precise, buildable realities.

Think about it: most design, architecture, and engineering contracts hinge on delivering specific technical drawings before payment is released. And who produces those drawings?
Not the CEO. Not upper management.
It’s the CAD designers.

That’s where the opportunity lies for you. Even as a beginner, you can be part of the magic — helping transform great ideas into finished projects in the real world.

And about the future…

You might be wondering, “But what about AI?”

Here’s my take: AI is an incredible tool — one of the most powerful ever invented. But that’s all it is… a tool.
Doomsday predictions about every job disappearing are cheap and easy. Get lots of clicks.
Doers get things done. Fear doesn’t build careers — skills, action, and persistence do.
